DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF WI STATEMENT ON UPCOMING AMENDMENTS

At their recent Q2 meeting, the State Dem Party Admin Committee voted unanimously to endorse a “NO” Vote on both August ballot referendum questions.
In addition to the “NO” vote endorsement, the Party will be utilizing our organizing program and investing in other advocacy pieces to defeat the referendums.

Questions 1 and 2 would amend Wisconsin’s Constitution to restrict the governor’s ability to distribute federal funds, removing key checks and balances to instead give Republican politicians in the legislature sole authority to decide how these funds are used.

During the pandemic, Gov. Evers’ long-standing authority to quickly deploy federal emergency funding was key to saving lives and ensuring a robust economic recovery. These amendments represent yet another Republican power grab aimed at undermining Gov. Evers and creating more gridlock. If passed, they would make it more difficult for our state to get federal funding out the door to first responders during emergencies.

The consequences of these amendments could be far-reaching, beyond emergency relief. Federal funds are essential to many state agencies and programs. If passed, these amendments could delay funding for public health and food assistance, jeopardize federal grant funding for local infrastructure projects, and create logjams in funding for employment programs.

Republicans have turned Wisconsin’s Legislature into one the least productive legislatures in the country, and is too dysfunctional to be handed unfettered power over distributing federal funding that Wisconsinites depend on. WisDems is committed to doing everything we can to stop these risky and misleading constitutional amendments.
